Red Lorry Yellow Lorry "Blow" (1989)

Blow was Red Lorry Yellow Lorry's fourth album, released in 1989. It would be their final LP on major label Beggars Banquet off-shoot Situation Two in the UK; in the US it was released via Beggars Banquet/RCA. The album proved to be a slight change in direction for the band. While it still featured the Lorries's customary swirling rush of guitars, pounding drums, loud bass and Chris Reed's deep growling vocals, the songs here were a little slower, with stronger, more conventional melodies sweetened by occasional female backing vocals. Reed's lyrics were less downbeat, almost optimistic. Overall, Blow is a warmer album than the band's previous, somewhat dour offerings; the Lorries pretty much left their specious gothic rock trappings behind for good. The change may have resulted in better reviews but the sales were not impressive; Beggars Banquet dumped the band the following year.
